Suojelupoliisi has grown from a small and subdued agency into an international security and intelligence service with a staff of over five hundred people. Supo turned 75 in 2024.

As predecessor agencies of Supo, EK and Valpo reflected the values and practices of the political and social situation prevailing at the time.

Strategy of the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service

Supo is headed by a Director supported by a Deputy Director. The Service has seven departments.

The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (Supo) is an agency of the Ministry of the Interior.

About 570 staff members work at Supo. Average age of personnel is 43,1 years.

Counterintelligence defends Finland against the espionage and influence operations of foreign powers. This is one of the key functions of Supo.

Supo is Finland’s foremost expert on national security. It also wants to share this expertise with others.

Security clearance vetting seeks to prevent information of importance to Finland’s security from falling into the wrong hands. Security clearance vetting is only conducted for functions specified by law.

Supo may only conduct personnel security clearance vetting for businesses that it has approved for the security clearance vetting procedure.
